Never before has it been more important for businesses to be agile, scale up or down, or change course or direction quickly. Small and Mighty are part of the movement, and we apply these practices to our own business every day.

Founded by Tara James, Small and Mighty Group came to life after she recognised a gap in the workplace for skilled and diverse marketing, digital, sales, and creative contractor talent.

A low-risk, more hands-on alternative to the traditional employee and consultancy approach was needed.

Leading from the front, Tara builds her teams based on a client’s needs and challenges. In some instances, you may be working with just her, in others, a complete and diverse network of experts.


Tara James, Managing Director

Tara is Small & Mighty’s founder and chief strategist with over 17 years of industry experience and qualifications in business, marketing, tourism management, and law.

With a background across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors, she has excellent stakeholder and project management skills to get you to where you need to be.

Born in the pre-digital era, she remembers what it’s like to call up a friend on the phone and have to speak with Mr or Mrs so-and-so first. Her career in marketing, however, boomed as social media, websites and digital hit centre stage and became must-have parts of a successful business strategy. Tara’s experience later extended to teaching marketing, where she delivered online learning through the Swinburne University.

What gives Tara an added edge is she has held roles in business development, leadership and sales - reaching targets, and working directly with customers. She understands the vital connection between marketing, and the broader business, knowing they all must work together. 

Earlier in her career she worked in meetings, conferences, incentives and events (MICE) so it’s fair to say, she’s very organised and can juggle many things, with a smile on her face.

Tara's expertise will guide you through the marketing and technology maze, offering jargon-free, honest advice. Her strategies will give you the confidence to communicate effectively with your clients and grow brand awareness and sales without sacrificing the time you need to run your business.

Torben Soelvsteen

Torben is a globally successful business development, sales, and leadership training expert with specialist skills in customer experience and change management. He is also highly educated with a degree in education, master in organisational psychology, diploma in leadership and management and holds many certifications including change management.

Offering over 31 years of industry experience, his Scandinavian approach to business is agile, progressive, and customer-focused. Torben knows all sides of business, from working behind the counter to managing and growing 102 stores.

A self-confessed bookworm, Torben is a library of knowledge with a strong ability to apply theory and experience to real-life business. He has a keen eye for opportunity and believes that sales are a direct result of customer service. 

In 2012, Torben founded and created Denmark’s first nationally recognised retail leadership education. The initiative was developed through partnerships and funding from major retailers including McDonalds, The Body Shop, and Peugeot, as well as universities, government organisations, and the European Union. The 2.5-year course teaches management, sales skills, and customer service best practices, and is available through the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology. 

With networks and experience working in Australian, European, and Asian markets, Torben can communicate in 6 languages including English (native), Danish (native), German, Swedish, Norwegian, and French.
